What they do

A mechanical engineer researches and develops mechanically functioning equipment, components, or systems. Depending on the project and stage the engineer is in, they may be developing designs or testing a design in computer software or a lab. A mechanical engineer will see a project through from research and development to production and maintenance. Communication is important in this job, where you will work in team environments and with clients or upper management. A mechanical engineer may also monitor and improve upon processes in facilities, such as in a paper mill.

Mechanical engineers work in a multitude of industries, typically in an office or testing space. They may visit worksites as well.
